Life doesn't always go to plan, and there are times when a finance repayment is harder to make than expected. Knowing what happens — and what to do — puts you in a much better position than hoping the problem resolves itself.
What Happens Immediately
Most lenders have a short grace period before a missed payment triggers a formal default process — but this varies. What typically happens in the first few days:
- The payment fails and the lender is notified automatically
- A dishonour fee is often applied to the account
- The lender may attempt to contact you by phone or email
A single missed payment that is caught and remedied quickly is the least serious outcome. The key is to act, not wait.
What Happens If It Continues
If the payment remains missed and no contact is made with the lender:
- A formal default notice may be issued — this is a legal notice requiring the arrears to be remedied within a set timeframe
- The default may be recorded on your credit file, which affects your credit score and future finance applications. For more on how credit reporting works, see our post on credit scores and vehicle finance
- If arrears continue, the lender has the right to repossess the financed asset
Repossession is a last resort and lenders generally prefer to work with borrowers to find a solution — but it does happen when contact isn't maintained.
What to Do If You're Struggling
The single most important thing: contact your lender before you miss a payment, not after.
Lenders have hardship provisions under New Zealand's Credit Contracts and Consumer Finance Act (CCCFA). If you are experiencing genuine financial difficulty, you can apply for a hardship variation — this may allow a temporary payment reduction, a repayment holiday, or an extension of the loan term to reduce repayments.
These options are available, but they require proactive contact. Lenders are far more accommodating when you reach out early.
How Finance Worx Can Help
If you arranged your finance through Finance Worx and are experiencing difficulty, contact us. Finance Worx may be able to assist with the lender on your behalf and identify what options are available. Acting early keeps options open — waiting until arrears accumulate removes them.
Getting Finances Back on Track
A missed payment or a period of financial difficulty doesn't permanently close the door on future finance. Lenders weight recent conduct more heavily than older history. Getting back on track — consistent repayments, resolved arrears, stable income — rebuilds your position over time. For more on applying for finance after a difficult period, see our post on finance after financial difficulty.
