New Zealand has a large and growing population of people on work visas, skilled migrant visas, and residency pathways — many of whom need a vehicle and aren't sure whether finance is available to them. The short answer is that it depends, but it's more achievable than many people assume.
What Lenders Look At
Lenders assess visa holders in much the same way they assess any applicant — income, employment stability, credit conduct, and the asset being financed. The additional consideration for visa holders is the remaining validity of the visa relative to the loan term.
Key factors:
- Visa type and remaining duration — a work visa with two or more years remaining is assessed more favourably than one expiring in three months. Open work visas attached to a partner's residence application, or post-study work visas, are also generally acceptable — however the partner who holds the main visa generally needs to be added as a borrower
- Employment — a confirmed employment arrangement in New Zealand, with verifiable income, is the strongest supporting factor
- Credit history — if you have a New Zealand credit file, lenders will assess it. If you're new to New Zealand, the absence of a local credit history is a neutral factor, not a negative one
- Loan term vs visa duration — most lenders want the loan term to align with or sit within the visa validity period, or for there to be a credible residency pathway. There are some lenders who will extend past the visa term in some circumstances — it is worth reaching out to us to see if you might qualify
Which Visa Types Are Generally Acceptable
Lenders vary in their approach, but applications from holders of the following visa types are typically considered:
- Skilled Migrant Category visas
- Essential Skills work visas (with sufficient remaining duration)
- Open work visas (including those linked to a partner's residency)
- Post-study work visas
- Employer-sponsored visas with confirmed employment
Tourist visas and visitor visas do not meet lender criteria — a New Zealand-based income and the right to work are required.
What Helps Your Application
- A longer visa duration, or evidence of an active residency application
- Confirmed employment in New Zealand with payslips or a letter of offer
- A New Zealand bank account with a positive conduct history
- A deposit, which reduces the lender's exposure and can make approval more achievable
